I feel that as a part of the Feux-hollywood-Filipino-made-Vietnam-war-movie-made-after-the-vietnam-war-but-pretends-the-Vietnam-War-hasn't-ended group of films, Phantom Soldiers sits in an extremley oversaturated and oddly specific crowd. With all that in mind I was drawn to this movie for it's rare (for the sub-sub-sub-genre) ability to carve out its own identity through the titular Phantom Soldiers and the mystery surrounding them. It's only too bad that when the characters finally come around to actually solving the mystery, the big reveal is just super lame. Up to the point where [SPOILER] it's revealed that they're all just regular Russian soldiers pretending to be US soldiers to make the US army look bad, these guys are pretty scary even going back to the opening scene. Afterwards, they suddenly become comically easy to kill (apparently all they needed to do was aim for the lenses in their masks or just throw a grenade at them) and as a result the whole thing loses all of its steam for me in the final act.
