Boy meets girl, boy makes robot, boy loses robot and girl and decides to put a brain chip in girl's head, turning her into a psycho killer. Tale as old as time, I reckon. The real horror is Wes Craven opting to make this movie a Pg-13 thriller, and the studio flipping out about not having any gore and blood, hastily reshooting and rewriting the film to such an extent that they had to walk back the gore.
